It’s incredibly common to start a diet with a high level of enthusiasm only to have that enthusiasm wane after a week or two when you haven’t lost as much weight as you had hoped. Sometimes you will be really fortunate and have really rapid results but most of the time it takes a lot more time and a lot more persistence. This is why you should learn as much as you can about what actually works in terms of weight loss, no matter what kind of diet that you really want to try.
When it comes to your eating and exercise habits, you don’t want to normal. This is because, in the US (and lots of other places), the "normal" person is overweight and doesn’t exercise often enough. This means that when you use the people in your social, employment and familial circles as your role models for fitness there are major chances that you are going to wind up overweight.
There is always social pressure to conform but you need to be strong in your stance if you are fully committed to being healthy and losing weight. Just because everybody else you are with is reaching for second portions or bigger portions doesn’t mean that you need to do the same. You may want to hang out with friends with the same goals as you have, or join a support group if necessary. Do not, however, just follow along with the group if their habits aren’t healthy.
When you go out to eat or order takeout it becomes much more difficult for you to lose the weight that you want to lose. No matter which restaurant or eatery you’ve chosen you are much more likely to eat portion sizes that are too big and that have more calories than any meal that you would have made on your own at home. This is true for every meal, so if you eat out for lunch each day, you might want to think about making your lunch at home and then bringing it in to work. That doesn’t mean that you aren’t ever allowed to go out and treat yourself but if you do this a lot you will have a much harder time losing weight. You are simply too tempted and served portion sizes that are too large for eating out to be good for any diet that you’ve chosen to try.
Celebrity diets and exercise videos are all over the place and some of them are really popular. You can check them out if you want to, but you should be careful before you believe that some celebrity has all of the answers that you need. So many of the famous celebrities are rail thin but that doesn’t mean that being so thin is good for you. Some of these same celebrities do extreme diets to lose weight for the roles they play. Some people have very serious problems, like eating disorders and drug habits. We don’t mean that all celebrities are frauds, just that you shouldn’t automatically trust someone just because he or she is thin or has a book or video deal.
There are just as many dieting myths as there are dieting facts, and when you want to lose weight, you need to learn how to tell the two apart. When you read or hear something, whether it’s from a supposed expert or from an article like this one, you should always verify the information as much as possible. When you learn more and gain more knowledge you’ll have a much easier time choosing the best diets.
